What Ilford housing means for your carpets
Away from the town centre, much of Ilford is Edwardian and interwar family housing, and a very common layout is the through-lounge: front and back reception rooms knocked into one long space. That gives a single run of carpet that can stretch the full depth of the house, with the heaviest wear along the route between the front door, the kitchen and the sofa.
The thing we see more in Ilford than anywhere else is a large rug laid on top of fitted carpet. It looks good and it protects the carpet from some wear, but it creates problems underneath that nobody notices until the rug is lifted.
Fine grit works through the rug and settles into the carpet below, where no vacuum reaches it, and slowly abrades the pile. The rug’s weight crushes the carpet flat in its exact outline. Some rug backings, particularly on cheaper printed rugs, can transfer dye onto a light carpet if either gets damp. And when a drink goes over, it soaks through the rug and spreads into the carpet beneath, where it sits unnoticed.
So a proper clean in an Ilford through-lounge usually means two jobs: the rug and the carpet under it, done separately. Cleaning the rug where it lies, on top of the carpet, pushes moisture straight into the carpet beneath.
What we plan around in Ilford
Built into the quote rather than discovered on the doorstep.
Rugs laid over fitted carpet
The rug is lifted and cleaned separately from the carpet it sits on. Cleaning one on top of the other drives water into both.
Crushed pile in the shape of the rug
Carpet under a heavy rug flattens in its outline. Cleaning and grooming lift much of it, though pile crushed for years may not fully recover.
Long through-lounge traffic routes
One continuous walkway from front door to kitchen. It usually cleans up well because the soil is spread along a long path rather than concentrated.
Town-centre flats
Newer apartments near the station and the High Road are smaller jobs, often carpeted only in the bedrooms.

Parking and access in Ilford
The town centre and the streets near Ilford station are heavily restricted and mostly paid. Residential roads further out towards Valentines and Seven Kings are easier, though Redbridge operates controlled zones on many of them.
Many of the family houses here have driveways, which makes the start of a job much quicker. If yours does, tell us.
Ilford is a short run east from our Leytonstone base, so arrival windows here are dependable.
Parking restrictions are set by the council, not by us. Redbridge publishes the current zones and visitor permit rules on its own website, and it is worth a look if you are not sure about your street.
Straight answers, including the unhelpful ones
Answered the way we would answer them on the phone. Some argue against hiring us.
Should I leave my rug on the carpet while you clean?
No. Cleaning a rug in place on top of a carpet pushes water through into the carpet below, which then takes far longer to dry. The rug comes up, and each is cleaned in its own right.
Why is there a darker rectangle where my rug was?
Often the opposite of what it looks like: the exposed carpet around the rug has faded in daylight while the covered part kept its colour. Sometimes it is soil that worked through the rug. Cleaning fixes the soil. It cannot restore faded dye.
My rug has left a colour mark on the carpet. Can that come out?
Sometimes. Dye from a rug backing that has transferred when damp is a true dye stain, and on light carpet it can be stubborn. Tell us before the clean so we can test and treat it first rather than spread it.
Is a rug on top of carpet a bad idea?
Not at all, but it needs a non-slip underlay that will not mark the carpet, and lifting and vacuuming underneath every few weeks. That single habit prevents most of the problems on this page.

Frequently asked
Which parts of Ilford do you cover?+
IG1 and IG3, including Ilford town centre, the High Road, Cranbrook Road, Valentines, Ilford Lane, Loxford and Seven Kings, out to the Goodmayes and Gants Hill borders.
Can you clean a large rug and the carpet under it?+
Yes, and that is the right way to do it. The rug is lifted and cleaned separately, and the carpet beneath is cleaned where it lies.
Can you clean a knocked-through lounge in one go?+
Yes. A through-lounge is cleaned as one continuous floor, which is simpler than two separate rooms.
How long does it take to dry?+
Carpet is usually touch-dry in two to four hours. Keep rugs off it until it is fully dry, or damp can transfer between them.
