How we deep clean upholstery
Fabric test
We identify the fabric and run a colour-fastness test so cleaning is matched to the material, never a one-size chemical.
Pre-treat
Body oils, grease and stains are broken down with a WoolSafe-approved pre-spray suited to the fibre.
Deep extract
Low-moisture hot extraction lifts the soil out without over-wetting delicate upholstery.
Groom & dry
The pile is groomed and air-moved so most items are touch-dry within a few hours.
Upholstery cleaning codes, explained
Almost every sofa carries a small label under a seat cushion with a single letter on it. That letter decides what can safely touch the fabric.
Water-based cleaning
Water-based products are safe. This is the most common code on modern fabric sofas and the most straightforward to deep clean.
Solvent only
Water will stain or ring the fabric. Cleaning must be done with a dry solvent. Common on delicate and some natural weaves.
Either method
Also written SW. Both water-based and solvent cleaning are acceptable, so the choice is made on the soiling rather than the fabric.
Vacuum only
No liquid of any kind, water or solvent. Cleaning is limited to vacuuming and light professional dry methods.
If there is no label, or it has worn away, do not guess. An S-coded fabric cleaned with water rings permanently, and that is the most common way a sofa gets damaged at home. Send us a photo of the fabric and we will advise.
What sofa cleaning fixes, and what it does not
Upholstery responds well to cleaning, but its limits are clearer than carpet.
What comes out
- ✓Body oils in the head rests and arms, which is usually the real reason a sofa looks dull
- ✓General soiling and the grey cast that builds up across the seat cushions
- ✓Most food and drink marks, particularly if they have not been scrubbed in first
- ✓Odours held in the fabric itself, including pet smells
- ✓Dust and dust mite allergens in the surface layers of a mattress
What will not come out
- ✗Pile crush and flattening on a velvet or chenille, which is a change in the fabric surface rather than dirt
- ✗Sun fading along a window line, and mismatched fading between cushions that have not been rotated
- ✗Anything that has soaked into the foam rather than the cover, including deep mattress stains
- ✗Rings left by a previous home spot-clean on a solvent-only fabric
- ✗Wear at the arm and seat edges where the weave has thinned or pulled

How often should you professionally deep clean a sofa?+
For a family sofa in daily use we recommend a professional deep clean every 12 months, or every 6 months in homes with pets, allergies or young children. Regular cleaning removes the body oils and dust that break fibres down over time.
Can you clean a sofa without leaving it soaking wet?+
Yes. We use a low-moisture hot-extraction method that lifts dirt while keeping fabric only lightly damp, so most sofas are touch-dry in 2 to 4 hours rather than a full day.
Do you clean leather as well as fabric upholstery?+
We specialise in fabric upholstery including velvet, linen, cotton and synthetics. We also clean and condition part-leather frames; for full-leather suites we will advise on the right treatment when you request a quote.
What is the letter on the label under my sofa cushion?+
It is the cleaning code, and it decides what can safely be used on the fabric. W means water-based cleaning is suitable. S means solvent only, and water will mark it. WS or SW means either is acceptable. X means vacuum only, with no liquid of any kind. It is the first thing we check.
