What carpet cleaning fixes, and what it does not
Cleaning removes what sits in the pile. It cannot replace fibre that is already worn away. The honest split, so you know before you book.

How to tell what your carpet is made of
The fibre decides the method. Here is how to work out what is on your floor.

Wool carpet cleaning
Wool carpet can be deep cleaned safely with hot water extraction, as long as the water is kept cool rather than hot and every product is pH-neutral and wool-safe. Wool holds far more water than synthetic fibre, so the extraction has to be thorough and drying takes a little longer. Heat, strong alkaline shampoo and hard scrubbing are what damage it, not water itself.
Why wool needs a different approach
Wool is a protein fibre, much like hair. Each strand is covered in tiny overlapping scales and a thin natural layer of lanolin, which is why a good wool carpet resists soiling and springs back underfoot. Both of those qualities are easy to strip away. An alkaline shampoo dissolves the lanolin, and heat combined with agitation makes the scales lock together, which is the same felting that shrinks a wool jumper in a hot wash.
Wool can also absorb a surprising amount of moisture before it even feels damp. That is useful in a living room and awkward during cleaning, because a wool carpet can seem dry on top while the base of the pile is still wet. Fitted wool carpet that is over-wetted can shrink back from the edges, and carpets with a natural jute backing can develop brown tide marks as they dry, which we explain in why stains come back after cleaning.

Wool blends
A great deal of UK fitted carpet is an 80/20 blend, meaning 80 per cent wool and 20 per cent nylon. The nylon adds hard-wearing strength, but the wool still decides how the carpet has to be cleaned. We treat a blend exactly as we would pure wool.
Stains on wool
Wool takes up dye readily, which is what makes it so rich in colour and also why red wine, tea and coffee can mark it more stubbornly than they would a polypropylene carpet. Blot rather than rub, use cool water, and avoid supermarket stain removers unless the label says they are safe for wool.
