What Wapping housing means for your carpets
Wapping’s riverside was lined with warehouses serving the docks, and many of them have since been converted into apartments. They keep the character that made them desirable: exposed brick, heavy timber beams, tall windows and, very often, the original wide timber floorboards. Newer riverside blocks sit alongside them.
That changes what gets cleaned. Where most of London has fitted carpet, a Wapping conversion is more likely to have a large rug, or several, laid across hardwood, with carpet only in the bedrooms. The rugs are often good ones: wool, hand-knotted, or the soft, shiny viscose rugs that are popular in design-led flats.
A rug on timber is a different job from a rug on carpet. The danger is the floor, not the rug. Wet-cleaning a rug where it lies can let moisture through the rug onto the boards beneath, and water sitting on old timber can leave dark marks or make boards swell and cup. So a rug on a wooden floor is either lifted and cleaned elsewhere in the room on a protective sheet, or taken away to be cleaned and dried properly.
Viscose deserves a specific warning here because it is so common in these apartments. It is made from wood pulp and loses much of its strength when wet, and it tends to go stiff, distorted and discoloured if cleaned like wool. It needs a low-moisture specialist approach, or, frequently, cleaning off-site.
What we plan around in Wapping
Built into the quote rather than discovered on the doorstep.
Protecting timber floors
Rugs are never wet-cleaned where they lie on hardwood. They are moved onto a protective sheet or taken away, so no water reaches the boards.
Viscose and art silk rugs
Common in these flats and easily damaged by water. They need a low-moisture method and often off-site cleaning.
Large, heavy rugs
Big rugs under heavy furniture take planning to lift and replace. Rug underlays that grip the floor should be checked and cleaned too.
Concierge and loading bays
Many buildings require a booked slot for loading or a service lift. We arrange it in advance with your building rather than on the day.

Parking and access in E1W
Parking in Wapping is limited and largely controlled by Tower Hamlets, and many streets are narrow and cobbled. Most apartment buildings have underground parking or a managed loading bay, so the key thing we need is your building’s arrangement.
Warehouse conversions often have goods lifts or wide stairwells, which helps with large rugs. Newer blocks usually need a service lift booked through the concierge.
Wapping is a scheduled trip from our Leytonstone base rather than a short hop, so we book E1W work in advance and give an arrival window.
Parking restrictions are set by the council, not by us. Tower Hamlets publishes the current zones and visitor permit rules on its own website, and it is worth a look if you are not sure about your street.
Straight answers, including the unhelpful ones
Answered the way we would answer them on the phone. Some argue against hiring us.
Can you clean a rug without lifting it off my wooden floor?
Not safely with water. Moisture passes through a rug and onto the boards underneath, and wet timber can mark or cup. The rug is either lifted onto a protective sheet or taken away, which is better for the rug as well as the floor.
My rug is described as bamboo silk. Is that real silk?
No. Bamboo silk and art silk are both names for viscose, a fibre made from wood pulp. It looks beautiful and behaves badly when wet, so it needs a specialist low-moisture clean rather than an ordinary one.
Is it better to have a rug cleaned away from home?
For valuable, delicate or very large rugs, usually yes. Away from the home a rug can be dusted properly, washed with controlled water and dried flat, none of which is easy in a living room.
Do I need professional cleaning for a rug I only walk past?
Probably not often. A rug that is walked around rather than across mostly needs regular vacuuming and turning to even out sunlight. A rug under a dining table or in a doorway needs cleaning far more often.

All of E1W, including Wapping High Street, Wapping Lane, the streets around Wapping station and Shadwell Basin, out to the St Katharine Docks and Limehouse borders.
Do you clean rugs on hardwood floors?+
Yes. Rugs on timber are lifted onto a protective sheet or taken away for cleaning, so no water reaches the floor beneath.

Do you work in buildings with a concierge?+
Yes. Tell us your building when you book and we arrange loading or service lift access in advance.
